Maurizio Abate

Maurizio Abate is an Italian guitarist and composer active in the fields of experimental music, contemporary folk, and psychedelia.
Born and raised in Milan, over the years he has developed a personal language based on timbral exploration, improvisation, and a deeply expressive use of the guitar, embarking on a constantly evolving path oriented towards the construction of deep and immersive listening spaces. Active since the early 2000s, he has taken part in various collective projects with musicians, sound artists, and performers from different fields, moving between electroacoustic improvisation, environmental research, and psychedelic experimentation:

Virginia Genta, David Vanzan, Neokarma Jooklo Trio, Kawabata Makoto, Golden Cup, In Zaire, Reset, Giorgio Pacorig, BeMyDelay, Al Doum and the Faryds, Riccardo Sinigaglia, Rella the Woodcutter, Canedicoda, Matteo Uggeri, Alberto Boccardi, Claudio Rocchetti, Luca Venitucci, Eternal Zio, Takehisa Kosugi, John Paul Jones, Merce Cunningham Dance Company.

Collaborations are always open-ended processes, whether they involve recording sessions, artist residencies, or site-specific performances. In these contexts, the guitar does not take on a traditional solo role, but becomes a relational instrument, capable of generating textures, resonances, and harmonic structures that intertwine with the sound devices of other musicians.
Interaction and mutual listening are central elements of this practice, which also constantly nourishes and transforms his solo work, a privileged place for his artistic research.
Here, Abate constructs essential and immersive compositions, balancing meditative repetition, emotional tension, and attention to sonic detail, where silence and resonance become structural elements, an integral part of the writing.
